El Hospital Garrahan cuenta con un equipo de 30 personas altamente calificado en la Unidad de Virología y Epidemiología Molecular (UVEM), perteneciente al Servicio de Microbiología, que durante la pandemia procesa hasta 100 muestras diarias de PCR (polymerase chain reaction), las pruebas diagnósticas para coronavirus.

La doctora Andrea Mangano, jefa de la UVEM, fue seleccionada junto a otros 63 científicos argentinos para financiar sus investigaciones sobre coronavirus. Estudiará el desarrollo de metodologías moleculares rápidas para el diagnóstico y monitoreo de las infecciones por COVID-19.
